Projectile Motion

Projectile Motion

Any object thrown through the air under the force of gravity is a projectile (Bullet, Football, etc..)

Horizontal and Vertical Components
Projectile motion can be analysed by two simple motions:
•Constant Velocity Motion
•Constant Acceleration

In a vacuum, if two objects of the same or different mass are released from the same height and allowed to fall straight down, they reach the ground at the same time.
(On Earth, we have air resistance to slow down objects, there is a terminal velocity and object can reach on its fall.)

Similarly, one object falling straight down and another projected horizontally from the same height, also reach the ground at the same time.

The horizontal motion has no effect on the vertical motion.
They are independent of each other.

The reason for this strange effect is that gravity is the only force acting on the objects and this always attracts.

Trajectories
Horizontal motion is constant velocity, while the vertical component changes as a result of the acceleration of gravity.

The velocity vector at any point is tangential to the path followed by the projectile -- Its trajectory (This appears as a parabola)

If the velocity components in the horizontal (x) direction and the vertical (y) direction.

So, Assuming the initial velocity at t=0 is ū at an angle of ɵ to the horizontal, then the magnitude of the initial horizontal and vertical components of velocity are given by:
•Horizontal Component Ux = U Cosine ɵ
•Vertical Component Uy = U Sine ɵ

Example

If an object is projected at 50m/s-1 at and angle of 30o the initial horizontal and vertical velocities will be:

Ux = U Cosine ɵ
Ux = 50m/s-1 Cosine 30o
Ux = 43.3m/s-1

Uy = U Sine ɵ
Uy = 50m/s-1 Sine 30o
Uy = 25m/s-1

More To Come..

A Reason For Science

A Reason For Science
Dr Neil DeGrasse Tyson Quote

Do you think i am being driven when i look at the early universe or study the rotation of galaxies, or the consumption of matter by black holes?

Do you think i am being driven by, the lessening of the suffering of people on Earth?

Most research on the frontier of science, is not driven by that goal.

Period.

Now, that being said..
Most of the greatest applications of science that do improve the human condition, come from just that kind of research.

Therein is the intellectual link that needs to be established, in an elective democracy, where tax based monies pay for the research on the frontier.

Because, people are saying;
"Why are you researching that, when you should be finding a cure for my disease."

Okay, and i don't have a problem with that..

But, did you know that we diagnose your disease using an MRI..

And what is the physical principle behind the Magnetic Resonance Imager?

It came from a physicist who is an expert in atomic nuclei, wondering how you detect this in inter-steller space.

Do you think that physicist, when he came up with this understanding of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance..

Do you think he was saying to himself
"One day we will have machines, that will diagnose the condition of the human body without cutting it open in advance"

Do you think this was going on in his head?

Of course not!

It came out of this curiousity driven research..

Do you think Einstein, when he wrote down his equations for stimulated emission of atoms, that he is saying to himself..

"Hey, one day this will be the foundation of the laser; and we will have bar-coding.."
"One day, we will have laser eye surgery"

NO!

So, to say..
"The purpose of science is to improve life"

The purpose of science is to understand the natural world, and the natural world has..

Interestingly enough..

Built within it..

Forces, phenominon and materials that a whole other round of clever people.. Engineers.

In the case of the MRI, these are bio-medical engineers, basing their patents and their machine principles on physics.

Discovered by a physicist
[An Astrophysicist at that]

So, i take issue with the assumption that science is simply to make life better.

Curve Ball #13 - Evolution, Faith and Free-will.

Evolution, Faith and Free-will.

This is aimed at moderate/liberal Christians, or those who have come to terms with modern biology.
Do you believe in free will?
If you do, and you believe in evolution, I ask how can we be made in Gods image, if evolution by natural selection is blind?

If God prodded a few genes here and there, then there is no free will.
Life would be ultimately orchestrated.
Just a thought..
